Set years after the core game, The Alters’ new DLC, The Alters: Last Variable has had its release date confirmed as  July 13th.

For those unaware, The Alters is a large-scale sci-fi survival game which has you playing as Jan Dolski as he ventures across a hostile planet and uses copies of himself, “the Altars”, made from Rapidium to create alternative versions of himself. The expansion, Last Variable, features 20 hours of new content and deepens the games personal survival mechanics and sci-fi narrative.

Our reviewer, Dan, said “It’s cool! It’s funky! It’s everything I want from this sort of genre, and I reckon it’ll go down as a classic that retains its stopping power long after the game’s time in the sun.” of The Alters in his review.

The Alters – Me, Myself and I

Years have passed since Jan refused to leave the planet, and he has come to the realisation that his work cannot be completed. Copies are made again but this time their expertise are based around science and instead use their combined expertise to attempt to unlock the mysteries of the oasis.

New regions will be available to explore and terraform with each transformation changing the landscape in a number of ways. Create new resources, build defences and experience new dangers as the world around you evolves and changes at your will.

Underground exploration and expansion is available with new soil types being able to be built into as well as new research and modules becoming available to research. One of those new modules is the cryosleep chamber which will allow you to assess the long-term effects of your scientific actions as well as buying you more time to continue your scientific exploits.

Players in the Altars: Last Variable will also be able to develop new tech and set up labs in the field. After each planetary cooldown you’ll be given a chance to check the surface of the planet and see what’s changed. The new field labs will also let your Alters continue their work while you take a nap in the cryosleep chamber being more efficient overall.

With lots in store for the new expansion Jan’s adventures seem to have only just started and with the main focus of Last Variable being on scientific exploration, who knows what possibilities could be uncovered in the pursuit of science.

The Altars: Last Variable will be available on PC, Xbox and PlayStation
