Forbidden Lands; Alderland gives you everything you need to take your campaign to the Southern kingdom of Ravenland, a once stable land that is now being torn asunder by multiple warring factions. It’s now available for pre-order on the Free League website.
The Forbidden Lands: Alderland campaign places players between the leaders of 10 would-be factions that are vying for control of Ravenland, with eight adventure sites that are spread across the lands’ twenty provinces. Alongside the adventure sites, there are full details and backgrounds on those 10 would-be contenders as well as guides on what makes the provinces (and their religions) distinct from one another.
It’s been just over eight years since Free League Publishing took Forbidden Lands to Kickstarter. We previewed it at the time and summarised our thoughts by saying: “Forbidden Lands is, to our minds, a great system to pick up and start playing, fantastic in its brutality and depth. There are a few minor details we feel could be improved upon, but overall it’s a solid experience delivered with a generous serving of style. While it will doubtless take a little while to get used to the rules, for GM and players, we consider it well worth the task. If you order the physical set, especially with the GM screen and card deck, you’ll be well placed to take your adventures out into the wilds and into the dark.”
The setting’s feeling of post-bronze age mythology, a fantasy land of knaves and post-empire glory, means that its gigantic, menacing monsters feel right at home and make combat feel brutal, fast and – well – important. While we’ve not had a decent look at Alderland’s bestiary just yet, The Graeme, a giant beast from one of the adventure site stories, fully underlines the scale and tact that is clearly prevalent when these encounters are designed. It very much feels like a scale you’d see in Ancient Greek tales, when you’re not fighting bandits – of course.
But, you don’t have to guess at the content. If you pre-order Forbidden Lands: Alderland then you get the PDF version of it as soon as the transaction completes, so you can get to running it before the book even lands with you – which is likely to be early next year.
