Headway is a card-based game about building skeletons

Headway is a card-based game all about using your skeleton parts so that you can eat soul juice that’s within your enemy skeletons! I played a two player version of the game at Game Con Canada, where I faced off against the other player, looking to consume their juice by getting it to my face.

In Headway your skeleton is made by placing out a bunch of individual pieces into a skeleton-like shape, though some parts might not be exactly correct. Each of these pieces of the skeleton kind of work differently as they have abilities. there is a little card that tells you the different ways they move, as a little help! The hands can toss a body part between them, for example, and legs can walk a bit off of each other. Not all of these pieces need to be connected to other pieces, but if you do break them off, you might end up with stranded parts! Your chest can pull parts back towards you, which helps, but you’ll still need to manage your space.

The skeletons in Headway have a juice mocktail that the other is trying to drink. It’s more challenging than it seems as the movements of the skeleton parts do not allow you to go over the other player’s skeleton, unless your body part is the same as theirs. You still need to place your cards so part of them overlap another piece, which has you deciding how to keep parts together or move them a part. It’s an interesting game that just feels so much more strategic than it looks! The skeleton themselves are so cool in design, and I do love the concept behind this.

I played a two-player mode of the game, however, in a four or six player mode, you end up on teams with skeletons that can interlink their parts and help each other, which seems like an interesting way to play the game.

Headway is coming to Kickstarter soon, but you can join the mailing list for now.
