Computer Junkyard is a frantic, tactile race‑and‑build with excellent components and a clever spatial puzzle at its heart — it’s equal parts nostalgic charm and cut‑throat table play, though a few mechanical choices (notably theft and to a lesser extent placing bugs in other computers) can feel a bit punishing and swingy.
As someone who remembers the highs and lows of building my own computer and watching it boot, I found Computer Junkyard immediately appealing. The premise is super simple: you and your friends rummage through a shared bag of salvaged parts, then race against a two‑minute timer to assemble a working vintage PC that meets the secret requirements of your software tile. This combination of open market buying, negotiation (where just about anything can be swapped), and frantic timed building gives the game an interesting identity as a social, tactile scramble that rewards quick spatial thinking and a willingness to take risks.

Components and presentation are a highlight. The tiles are chunky and satisfying to pull from the pouch; the artwork leans into retro computer iconography with a wink (yes, there’s a Theme Park nod that made me grin). Out of the box the connectors feel robust and the tiles sit well on the chassis grid. My only caveat is that because the build phase is a repeated, physical race against the clock, the ports and connectors will see a lot of handling. I’d expect some wear over many plays if people are careless, but that’s a minor worry which is probably only going to cause problems for frequent players.
Mechanically Computer Junkyard splits neatly into two main phases. The pre‑build phase is a light economic and social game: draw tiles into the shared Junkyard, buy and sell based on a simple price board, make deals, or attempt thefts. The build phase is where the game really blows up — the lead player (SysAdmin) flips the two‑minute timer and then everyone scrambles to connect tiles to their motherboard, sliding and rotating their whole computer to fit the grid, and then finally installing software from a CD‑ROM. The first person to do this (after multiple pre-build and build phases) will win.

Because tiles come in quite a few different shapes and connections are colour‑coded, the spatial puzzle is more interesting than it first appears. Adding RAM or HDD’s to the databus often forces you to think several moves ahead about orientation and available port, and cable extenders allow players to tuck different pieces around corners or under other components just like when building a real PC.
The bugs mechanic is a clever but sometimes annoying twist. When a bug is attached it creates a chain of bugged hardware that can’t be disconnected, which introduces a bit of tension: you can sabotage opponents, but you also make that chain of components immune to theft by others. Debugging is possible, but it’s a game that prevents a player from drawing additional component pieces. Instead, they roll a dice and if it’s high enough, they successfully debug. On failure, they instead take a bug spray token that helps their chances of debugging next round. That unpredictability keeps the table lively and creates memorable moments when a near‑complete build is suddenly hamstrung by a well‑placed bug.

My main gripe is the stealing option in the pre‑build phase. It’s thematically on point — desperate scavengers will try to lift a crucial part — but in practice it’s high‑risk, high‑reward in a way that can feel unbalanced. Attempting a theft consumes your entire action for the turn (just like debugging) and can either net you a key component or do nothing. When it succeeds, it can be devastating for the victim, especially later in the game. I appreciate that theft is one of the few ways to obtain scarce parts, so it has a place in the design, but it can also produce a runaway moment where one player’s tempo is irreparably damaged. In our plays it created drama and amusement, but also frustration.
Between theft and bugging other players (which is done when a bug is drawn from the bag), Computer Junkyard is quite interactive and cut-throat. This is refreshing in many ways as few games really force this kind of interaction these days, but there’s a reason for that and its hard to avoid frustration creeping in. That said, theft is limited to only components at the end of a chain etc, so there are mitigations in place.

Pacing and replayability are solid. A full game sits comfortably in the 60–90 minute range, and the secret software tiles plus the randomness of the pouch mean each session plays differently. The game rewards learning: the first few plays are about understanding tile shapes and how the computer comes together, but once you’ve internalised those patterns the two‑minute scramble becomes an exciting, tense puzzle.
If you’re drawn to tactile, social games with a nostalgic theme and a frantic finale, Computer Junkyard is a great fit. It’s not a deep euro — it’s loud, physical and occasionally swingy and mean — but that’s part of its charm. For groups that tolerate a bit of take‑that and enjoy the theatre of a timed build, it will produce laughs, groans and a lot of memorable table moments. If you prefer games where every action feels carefully mitigated and balanced, the theft mechanic and bug randomness may grate. For me, the nostalgia, component quality and the satisfying spatial challenge make it worth the occasional rough edge.
