If you’ve been playing games for any amount of time, you’ve likely heard of Myst and Riven. The former of the two was the all time top grossing game for years, right up until The Sims came along. They are staples to PC gaming history. And now, both are coming out on Playstation, Xbox and the Microsoft Store.

Myst

Myst is a puzzle exploration game where players start off at a stunning island, that’s full of mystery and puzzles to solve. Through exploration and understanding your environment, you will discover the secrets around “Ages” – the long dormant locations throughout the island, and learn what happened to this island.

Riven

Riven is a similar style, beautiful exploration puzzle game where you find yourself in a strange world on the verge of collapse, needing to discover and solve puzzles, make a rescue, and escape. There are dense jungles, caverns and monolithic structures to explore. Along with a deeper story about a man who sees himself as a god.

There was actually a third entry, Obduction, which released only a couple of years back. We reviewed it at the time stating, “Obduction is a pretty strange game to classify, and much like the story that it tells, it seems to defy the normal classification of space and time. If it were made by anyone else, I’d be inclined to call it a walking simulator with puzzles, but Obduction comes from Cyan Worlds, the team behind both Myst and Riven.”

Both of these puzzle games are known for being quite challenging, with no real hint system like what we see in more straight forward puzzle games. People would, notoriously, use notebooks to list down details as they played through both games. The open-world nature of these games also allows for exploration and discovery, which feels neat with the different stories going on that tie into the environment. The aim of remastering them for consoles is to bring them to a new generation of players, to the newer age of console and to people’s home devices.

Whether you have heard of these classics and not given them a go yet or you have played them years ago and want to see how they stand up after all this time, both Myst and Riven are now available for pre-order on Playstation and PC, with Myst already being available to purchase on Xbox.
