Split Personality – 5 Cards from Reality Fracture for your Commander Deck
Last Magic Monday (Is this the official name for the segment? Maybe. Is it my own internal name for this segment? Absolutely). I walked you through my top 5 picks for Commanders from the new Reality Fracture set. This time, I’ll take you through what I think should be going in your library.
Every card will not work in every deck, this is true. However, whether it be for specialist strategies or just all round excellent performance in it’s colours, the five cards I list below are well worth consideration in any appropriate deck.
Gardenize

I’m not going to fill the list with just cards that I’m hoping to pull from boosters, but holy heck I really hope I manage to pull this card (or, you know, I’ll just go buy singles. We all know that’s less fun though). I know Green is known for ramp, but turning dead creatures into mana EVERY TURN?! This feels a tiny bit broken.
Mana is the resource every game is played with, other than, y’know, life. So more of it is never a problem. Any deck that relies on creatures and touches Green should consider this card at the end of the day, I know I’m looking at it for all my decks.
Lich’s Relic

Power creep is a consequence of any card game surviving for a long period of time. A one cost equipment with a two equip cost for that level of buff is fine, solid early game play. Three mana for a three creature kill spell? Pretty saucy. All that together on a single card? This is where things start getting ridiculous.
Whilst I wouldn’t pick this in place of a card that was on theme for any deck I played, I can be damn sure this will at least make it to final cuts on most Black decks I build.
Ajani’s Anguish

Along a similar line, one red and X cost to ping any target with X damage is snazzy, as is a trample enabler, and once again we have both on a single enchantment. I don’t really have much more to say on this one. If you favour the swingy side of Red, it’s a no brainer.
Way of the Mentor

I could have put most of the “Way of” cards on this list. It’s a Planeswalker set, I’m not sure what we expected, but obviously the support is superb. Lifegain in white is a classic that is well established, meaning that even though this is one of the few Way cards that doesn’t give your Planeswalkers new abilities, it’s going to make damn well sure they can use the ones they have if you play it right.
Surveillance Phantasm

One of the most annoying feelings in Magic is drawing a card you don’t need. Scrying and Surveiling exist to try and mitigate this, and Blue loves to do them. If your deck is themed right, I’m pretty sure you’ll be doing it most turns, so why not reward yourself with a solid flying (and vigilant) attacker whilst you do, hm? Especially at common rarity, this is a surefire way to keep some board presence whilst doing whatever Blue shenanigans you feel like doing.
These lists are always hard to write, especially on sets so chocked full of good stuff as this one. I hope I helped you pick out some includes for your next deck, but just because I didn’t mention something, doesn’t mean it isn’t good! Go out and explore the new set folks, and let me know what you find!
